How I got here…
A Journey Rooted in Play, Connection, and Sensory Learning
For more than 25 years, Tracy Patton has dedicated her career to engaging young children, families, and the professionals who support them. A nationally recognized early childhood consultant, Tracy wears many hats that reflect both her expertise and her heart for the field: national speaker and presenter, early childhood consultant and coach, child development specialist, parent educator, childhood grief facilitator, advocate, grant writer, trainer, circle time entertainer, and joyful mess maker.
Early Beginnings and the Power of Sensory Play
Tracy’s journey began with a simple but powerful realization: children learn best when learning feels joyful, playful, and safe. Her early work with infants and toddlers revealed that being silly, reading stories, and creating sensory-rich environments do far more than entertain. These experiences shape behavior, build early language and math skills, support self-regulation, and reduce stress for both children and caregivers.
As Tracy began sharing these insights with early childhood staff and parents, she saw firsthand how sensory play and storytelling could transform classrooms, routines, and relationships. By focusing on the connection between sensory experiences, social-emotional development, and behavior, she helped caregivers better understand the “why” behind children’s actions and create more responsive, effective learning environments.
From Local Workshops to National Impact
What began as informal conversations and small workshops grew into dynamic, engaging professional development experiences. Driven by her passion for supporting educators and families, Tracy began leading workshops that blend humor, research-based strategies, and hands-on learning. Her sessions address emotional regulation, challenging behaviors, and developmental milestones through sensory-based approaches that open doors to all areas of learning.
In 2012, Tracy founded Once Upon Some Messy Fun, a platform devoted to sharing her love of literacy, sensory play, and the educational power of “messy” learning with a strong focus on social-emotional development. Through this work, she became a sought-after national presenter, sharing her message at early childhood conferences, in-service trainings, community events, and virtual workshops. Once Upon Some Messy Fun, LLC was formally established as a business entity in January 2025, further expanding her ability to serve programs, organizations, and communities.
Advocacy, Innovation, and Community Engagement
Beyond training and workshops, Tracy is a passionate advocate for early childhood education. She works to elevate the importance of investing in the early years and has successfully secured grant funding for programs that strengthen families and improve outcomes for children. She has served on the board of Wonder Works Children’s Museum in Oak Park, where she continues to lead social-emotional learning story times that bring play, connection, and emotional literacy to life and support parents and caregivers.
A Lasting Impact
Tracy’s work has had a profound impact on early childhood programs, caregivers, and families. By equipping adults with practical tools, deeper understanding, and permission to embrace play, she helps create calmer, more connected, and more joyful learning environments. Her advocacy for sensory play and social-emotional learning continues to inspire educators and parents to see everyday moments as powerful opportunities for growth.
At the heart of Tracy’s work is a belief that the simplest experiences often matter most. A shared story, a sensory bin, a song sung loudly, or a splash in a puddle can leave a lasting mark. Through play, creativity, and connection, Tracy Patton continues to ensure that children and the adults who care for them receive the support they need to thrive.
